Abstract
Background and Objectives: Tinnitus retraining therapy (TRT), which is consist of intensive one-to-one directive counseling and sound therapy, has been presented as a good approach to tinnitus management. The purpose of this paper is to understand this therapy by showing its long term results.

Materials and Method: A total of 125 patients with tinnitus visiting Tinnitus Clinic, Kangnam St. Mary¡¯s Hospital from May, 1999 to March, 2003, who had received TRT for their tinnitus were included for evaluation of therapeutic efficacy of TRT. Their psychoacoustic characteristics of tinnitus and changes of subjective tinnitus were analyzed.

Result: About 80% of the patients showed subjective improvement of their tinnitus. Loudness, awareness, annoyance and effect on life of tinnitus were decreased after TRT. Tinnitus handicap score and loudness of tinnitus and minimal masking level in the tinnitogram were significantly decreased (p<0.01).

Conclusion: TRT has been showed to be effective in the treatment of subjective tinnitus. Its application should be considered to the patients with severe tinnitus without any help by other treatment modality.
